Gone but not forgotten!!
Wow . . . that was a very busy morning. Up at 5.20 a.m. and a long morning of welcoming the new owners, some of whom have had T.W. dogs who hit the Rainbow Bridge at 17 years old. Little Red collar went where in 1993 another Red Collar went. And guess what ON Call 11218's owner is/does ? You have to live in France and know that there are 2 telephone numbers for calling the Fire Brigade - 112 and 18 . . . . put them together and you get January 12th 2018 : (1.12.18) the puppies' birthdate ! And, yes, Christian is a Fireman !
Julien and Eve came down from Lamorlaye and Sari arrived from Finland.
Only 2 of the 7 new families are really new . . . Bertrand and Marie-Christine in the south west of France and Sari Osmala in Finland, all the others have already had Tintagel Winds dogs before. This creates a lovely family feeling of joy and trust.
Thank you all for the trust and may you all have the joy for many, many years that they brought me for 8 weeks.
A long and happy life to my babies and to their owners. I love you all.

8 weeks/semaines.
The Carats' departure day - 8 weeks . . . a new life begins !The Carats are leaving
I'm sad to see them go but believe and hope that I have chosen the right families for them all.
They don't seem the least anxious . . . so neither am I ! I think I've done my "job" - there are seven happy, lively, intelligent typical little Labradors who are a credit to their parents. A big THANK YOU to Foulby Still Talking (Chatterbox) for his 20 minutes' participation ( :D ) and to Jewel In Pure Gold of T.W. for her seven weeks' devoted participation, for all her hundreds of litres of top quality milk, her tongue that never stopped licking and cleaning and her ever-wagging tail.
7 weeks/semaines.
THE CARATS HAVE BEEN BENCHED !
Not brilliant conditions but rain is due for the next days and thursday is the microchipping and vaccination before departure friday and satuday.
So here they are. Unfortunately they are so used to my weird noises designed to grab their attention and thus produce the photo I desire - that they no longer react. They are pretty cool and not particularly surprised by any noise. I daresay the neighbours feel quite differently.
In a week all seven will have left . The nursery is going to feel very empty.

NO MORE MUMMY-JEWEL . . . a big shock for babies used to a devoted milk-bar, an avid licker and a gentle play-mate. She has returned upstairs to join Yala once more.
So here they are, just 9 days from departure.

They are all growing well. Red still lagging but fun and happy and Pale Blue, the greedy monster, at the other end of the scale - fun and happy too. Jewel is not taking kindly to being removed for longer and longer periods but in another week she'll be virtually "gone" from the puppy pen and milk will only be in bowls to lap. It's a hard life.

Not quite sure whether delicate colours or eco with soaking or fast spin really will do the trick.
What they like is that it rolls from side to side when they move - it's kind of a fun toy to have in your nursery and works like the wheel for guinea pigs and mice.
4 weeks/semaines.
Apologies for traces of egg custard - I fed them before the photo session hoping to keep them less bouncy.
They still bounced with dirty faces. Kids will be kids !

A big move forward. Yesterday they said goodbye to the whelping box and discovered the big puppy pen. And toys. They are starting to play seriously with one another.
Now on 2 meals a day and about to go onto 3 on friday (4 weeks) Puppy meal soaked in milk has now been added to the egg custard.
Jewel still totally devoted so that when she sees them eating she want to throw up her own meal for them. I'm having a little problem stopping that which is always the sign of a wonderful mother following nature's rules.

The Carats are now three weeks old.
Growing so fast and so well. You can almost hear the tic-toc of their brains doing overtime trying to understand all they can now see and hear. Now 4 1/2 times their birth-weight (average)
Everything seems a bit foxy to them this afternoon.

They were thrilled to discover the famous egg-custard and leapt on it and into it. Jewel was a bit surprised to come back in and find herself with a lot of cleaning up to do, but I don't think I've ever known a bitch who wasn't delighted to rediscover her childhood favourite : egg-custard.
It's one small step (into the custard) for the babies but one giant step towards the future.
In another week they'll have hit the floor with wider horizons and their first toys. Way to go Carats . . . .

All eyes now open though focus still a little blurred I think, and wobbling up on their feet - what an incredible growth rate and skill development puppies have compared with humans.
Almost 4 times their birth-weight, walking, curious to discover their environment, happy to suck on my nose, finger or chin (bit of confusion in their minds as to whether Jewel or I am their mother (actually it's both of us !)
Jewel still devoted and a very easy-to-care-for mother. (Well . . . only 2 collars swallowed this morning)
As they are putting on perfectly adequate weight and Jewel has fountaines of top-quality full-cream milk I have decided to wait till thursday to start the egg-custard
The two girls and two of the boys are reserved for now.

Scrubbed up, polished up and thoroughly cleaned up. Jewel and the babies are now presentable !
All is calm and Jewel appears to be an excellent mother. Not even making a fuss after being washed and then set aside while I cleaned up the babies, the whelping box, the walls, the floor and fixed the pig-rails (roll-over bars is perhaps a nicer term !) in place. Which took quite some time.
These puppies will be having names starting with "O" - and none that I have used 20 years go - every puppy deserves his/her very own name.
