Happy and long life babies, I chose your families with care

WOW - quite a day ! Up before 6 a.m. to face some rather surprised dogs, knowing that getting them all out, fed, watered, poo-picked and parked before 11 a.m. + getting me ready to face the puppies leaving, checking the paperwork and having time for every one meant getting a move on. And fast.

All the puppies seemed happy with their choice of humans. They are now scattered all over France and one has gone to Luxembourg.
Long and happy lives my ex-babies. You have been a joy to rear.❤️❤️
Post scriptum - So many heartfelt thanks for the news and updates and photos today of the puppies who left. I don't need to wonder whether they are happy !

PRETTY DAMN QUICK OF T.W.

Am I feeling bereft ? Well, yes, but how not to be happy that qthis 5 months' old puppy is finding its forever home. Heartache and pleasure together, a strange mixed feeling.

Notwithstanding (I love this word !) the poor weather, grey, heavy skies and no trace of sun, with the help of Erika I got some benched photos of Team Meg this afternoon. Very dissipated, not really focused on being obedient little furballs, but I bagged all eleven of them.

Tomorrow it's vaccinations, microchips and Vet's basic puppy survey. And Friday the departures start. Well done Meggy for having been a wonderful mother capable of rearing eleven babies, calm and devoted.

Team Meg growing well, active, bright-eyed, forever wagging and rushing to greet any human in the vicinity. But a bench photo seems pretty unrealistic with the temperature around 0°C, and keeping 11 puppies on a bench outside in a photogenic manner when you live alone . . . this may be the first lot of pups who don't get benched !

25/12/2019

Christmas Day is like any other day when you have 15 puppies and 10 adult dogs to look after. And no help. The morning is 6 1/2 hours work non-stop.
Team Meg is now divided into two separate groups.
Eleven 6 weeks' old puppies in one pen became unrealistic for the puppies and for me, so the big change this morning has been to put the 5 black girls on one side and the 4 boys and 2 yellow girls on the other side. Room to breathe, room to play.
 Yesssss, there's always ONE !

The quickest way to wash a Labrador - the 30°/ 30-minute cycle and hey presto : a perfectly clean puppy. Unfortunately my machine is too small for dogs over 12 kilos so they have to be washed by hand.
Picture
Hummmm . . . can someone explain why the yellows eat together and the blacks eat together but they always initially seem to choose their same-colour siblings before spreading out to find an easier meal with less hassle.

In the background - 4 puppies of Charlie's in a photo taken 25 years ago. Charlie is grand-daddy to these "today" babies.
Pure joy for me (and a bit of pee and poo too) with such a lively, complicit and fun group. It feels like the perfect litter, no-one bullying anyone, no-one left on the side-lines. One big, happy family of puppies in Meg's loving care.
She's slowly spending a little more time away from them and they are now on 3 meals a day. New owners are now coming to choose their puppy and are finding it extremely difficult. Without their collars there's no way of knowing who's who.

I'm Turquoise, the smallest of the five black girls, but with a big heart, a big brain, and 2 beady eyes watching everything. I love eating my egg custard with Salmon & Rice puppy food and I am growing well. It was a difficult start for me with TEN brothers and sisters, all bigger and pushier than I am, and my lovely Mummy, Meg, who has only 8 teats. Good thing my other Mummy invented the "Punishment Box".

Leaps and Bounds - Team Meg have changed incredibly over the last week. Socializing together and with me, wagging tails, intelligent perceptive observation of their environment : sounds and sights. Eating with better table-manners !
Meg now grounded with them. What a wonderful, gentle, devoted mother she is.

A very busy morning grounding the Meggies. Which meant removing the whelping box and doing a complete clean-up. Putting paper down and vet-beds and then introducing the babies to a life with a wider horizon. Finding several of them suspended while trying to climb out of the whelping box was a wake-up call. Done. Meg now has "the whole world in her paws".
Cutting 99 nails took time, plus the weighing and introducing the babies to an upgraded breakfast.

Team Meg discovered Egg Custard today (18 days) and took to it like a duck to water. Four eggs and a litre of milk didn't last long and none of them was shy about "lapping" instead of sucking.
That's one smart team, and one very happy Meggie who loves doing the post-lapping clean-up of paws and faces. All eleven of them.

"No room at the inn" - indeed at only 16 days' old the whelping box is really too small for such a big, busy and enterprising team. But I remember that with her 4 babies last time, they were clambering out at 2 weeks, up on all four feet🐾🐾. Just as are these ones.
Meg is going to be really happy tomorrow when I introduce them to Egg Custard. I'm sure they will be too.
Loved that little paw sneaking out, did that little one really think she could squeeze through the hole and escape ?

Team Meg were 2 weeks yesterday. All is well.👍 In view of the numbers, the Punishment Box has been changed for a Punishment Caddy (well if you have to be punished at least be comfortable). The 5 smallest get a bit of extra Meg.
Eyes are opening and they're starting to look more like real-life puppies

1 week/semaine
Meg's eleven are now one week old. They have been moved to the second whelping box with no roll-over bars any more, to make room for Jewel, now in the nursery and whose babies with Mallorn's Flintstone are due next week.
Considering that there has been no bottle-feeding at all and that Meg has entirely fed her offspring herself, I am very pleased with them and very proud of her. Normally one hopes for doubling the birth-weight between one week old and ten days old. Just watching little Turquoise who seems perfectly happy but is lagging for now.
Meg seems to be losing less blood this afternoon and I hope the medication is now working. Not happy to find that twice she stuffed the quarter-of-a-pill somewhere and then spat it out when I had left the nursery. I've improved my technique since last night

Team Meg - Day 5
Meg a little agitated and still losing blood.
Her temperature is normal. Appetite somewhat capricious but considering the quantity she's offered, that's pretty usual. Her poo is absolutely normal.
Puppies starting to get stuck in corners between the roll-over bars and then they get further blocked by siblings slotting themselves in behind them. The worst case of LEGO building. Going to have to get rid of the bars very shortly.
Pigmentation on the 3 yellows is coming in nicely - why wouldn't it with a father like Never.

Picture
Genius at work. Indeed. I can just about imagine the stupefaction of finding herself the Team Manager of eleven puppies. But she knows that she can count on me day and night for anything and everything. I'm kind of the Team Co-Manager I guess.

Team MEG - Day 4
Puppies doing well. All collars had to be seriously loosened this morning when doing the weighing.
In another couple of days there'll be the NINETY-NINE nails to trim . . and thereafter every five days. Busy time ahead.
Meg is truly a wonderful mother and a wonderful "being", calm, contented, obedient, in love with her babies.
And I said "raise your paw if you're a happy baby" and WOW - eleven little paws went up ! (see Pale Pink - first born and first paw up too !)

Day 3 and RAS ("Rien A Signaler" . . . um French !)
Meg is coping so very well that, for now, I have not put the "Punishment Box" into service. So long as the weight progression is as harmonious as now - I may not even need it.

2 days/jours

Day Two and all are progressing well. Yesterday their average gain was 4 grams, this morning it was 47 grams. Considering that some litters have no gain the first day . . . I'm happy with that.
For now I'm not bottle-feeding though I'm prepared for it and at the ready. I prefer for the babies to stimulate their mother's excellent supply and be fed naturally. We'll see. If they keep growing slowly but surely until the famous "18 days' old" when they start the egg-custard, I feel it's better for them in the long run. For now - not a peep out of any of them, all silent and happy.
Some enterprising individuals try escalating the heap in search of an available teat. But "available teats" are hard to find !

1 day/jour

8 months with no puppies and oh the pleasure today ! But never have I felt so utterly drained.
Never did it again. Never was a dog better named than Never ! Unless his name is Alway.

A hard day's night ! Meggy's temperature started to drop yesterday morning and the first baby stuck her little pink nose out and sniffed the air at 6 p.m.

And it went on and on. The first six puppies were all girls - 2 yellows and 4 blacks. In the end, Meg, this amazing "little" bitch produced TWELVE puppies though sadly N°10 was born dead. N°s 11 and 12 needed mouth-to-mouth and some serious stimulating and the emptying of mouth, nose and lungs but both are now O.K. The "last", N° 12 was born at 6.30 a.m.
And than, 24 hours after Puppy N°1 and 12 hours after Puppy N°12 . . . arrived, tonight, N°13. This was, indeed, a shock.
