BENCHED ? . . . For those waiting for the iconic "benched photo" : it's just not going to be. I tried, but being alone with no help to play the clown and grab the falling ones as I take the photos . . . . I gave up after a while because I'm in pretty poor shape, and trying to control ten puppies on a bench is just not possible alone today. And for the few days left before they leave - the weather is going to be stormy, wet and cold.
Well done Meggy for a wonderful job.
So I took the chance of a "cemented" photo and actually managed to get all ten facing me. Not exactly what I wanted but let's say it's better than nothing. I'll try again if and when I can but I fear . . . . .

Weight chart -
At six weeks they should be ten times their birth-weight. And they were, last Friday.
But that being said I expect the biggest to be just on or slightly under ten times, and the smallest . . . well over. It's a bit frustrating with this litter as the disparity was large at birth, the number of puppies important, and despite the Punishment Box . . . . the disparity is still important though everyone is in fine form

Meg now only with them for 3X 10 minutes per 24 hours, basically to drain her milk rather than for nourishing them. So no cleaning up by her !
Might try the puppies on a delicate cycle in the washing machine.
Post scriptum : They enjoyed it. Just not too much spinning as it upsets their knowing where they are, it confuses them.

Meg eats well over TWO kilos of puppy food with egg custard, sardines in tomato sauce and about TWO litres of milk PER DAY.
At 2.30 a.m. she goes out for a pee and a drink. I count the laps - between 220 and 270 laps of water . . . while I stand shivering beside her. Then a river of pee to beat the Ganges the Hudson the Seine and the Thames !
She's looking great for a bitch with ten puppies to feed. And she's the most careful, devoted and efficient mother. And so happy !

The incredible growth rate of puppies - and it could be even more spectacular if I were bottle feeding to supplement Meg - but I am not.
She is coping with the ten babies with her usual first class attitude. Totally devoted in the most sensible and efficient way.

25 days today and grounded since Sunday. Freedom (almost).
Meg being the good mother she is, goes to eat one of her numerous meals and the puppies leap on her bowl. And Meg retires to watch them eat her food.
Which is pretty strange as it's full of sardines in tomato sauce.

The horrible mess that's the first egg-custard for the Meggies. As usual there's more elsewhere than in their mouths but it can't be easy to find yourself faced with eating instead of sucking for the first time in your tiny life.
In a couple of days they'll have got the hang of it. A bit of a relief for Meg and she enjoys cleaning them up. It's a hard job being entirely responsable for ten babies.

Meg's idea of the Punishment Box is that it's for her too. I nearly had a heart-attack last week when I found her sitting on top of the four big puppies in it. They're now elsewhere to avoid an accident when I need to boost the little ones. Meg's babies now two weeks, eyes open and getting very active.
Miss "Skinned Alive" doing very well. My miracle girl.

1 week
The Meggies are already one week.
Difficult even with the Punishment Box (which Meggy doesn't like) to get the three smallest to put on enough weight while the biggest put on too much. Disparity in the weight gain. Hopefully better next week.
Tried bottle feeding the two smallest but they weren't having it.
Only two have not doubled their birth-weight this first week : Bordeaux and Fuschia (almost but not quite). Fuschia was the one who almost died at birth and I think I'm going to call her "Skinned Alive of T.W." as she's now alive after an hour and a half stuffed against my skin, a true miracle, but I do love puns and Skinned Alive is just too good to ignore !

It was a long wait, the first night sitting beside Meg . . . . for nothing and dawn broke and everyone was hungry and needed getting out and being poo-picked and settled, with endless running back to check Meg.
Finally at 10.15 p.m. when I was putting the dogs to bed and washing kennels and running back to check Meg - I found one frozen yellow puppy on the tiles, still in it's caul and utterly still. I was horrified and tried to massage and warm her and finally gave up and put her in the scales container for the weight, having cut the cord. Sad. But it's always difficult when you have no help.
An hour later when I was changing Joy's babies I heard a strange noise and realized it came from the table with the scales. That puppy was covered in blood and opening and shutting her mouth. I seized her, totally frozen and tied the cord off to stop the heavy bleeding and shoved her down onto my skin under my pullover, tied a leash between my waist and my bra so that she couldn't fall lower and sat down feeling just horribly guilty and extremely upset. Meg was indifferent.
It took her an hour and a quarter to warm up and start moving and I just kept on talking to her, telling her I loved her and that she'd be alright. Her first brother arrived and it was difficult dealing with him with her still next to my heart on my skin. And when I put him on his mother's teat I removed her with some misgiving and put her beside him. And she just latched on to a teat and started sucking. I could hardly believe it.
The rest of the night was painfully long and the whelping took over 15 hours from start to finish. The last three didn't survive, sadly. One had already been dead a while, weighing only 110 gms. And so we have ten live puppies, 5 blacks and 5 yellows. 7 rather small in weight but all vigourous and Miss Fuschia a true little star.
Meg is my smallest bitch who produces my biggest litters. An amazing girl.

Never mated Meg (Never Give Up). This time under my watchful eye and with my blessing.
With some positive results we may not get 11 again, nor the quantity of blacks . . . but we shall see in February if all goes well.
