I am totally shattered since yesterday afternoon when incomprehensibly my beloved and unique Cachi died when undergoing a C-section. I could not believe that my devoted yellow shadow was gone, she who was to be the one who stayed with me when finally I could no longer go on with more than one dog.
The heat and the number of her babies was tiring but she was an active healthy girl. No contractions to speak of, no Vets interested in reproduction and the Vet who’d been following her since the start of her season had gone on holiday. This local Vet had given me her perssonal number in case I needed it for in addition today is yet another bank holiday. 18 years in Sciez and I never had a reproach for the C-sections at my Vets. Impeccable conditions.
Yesterday was pretty horrifying on every count and considering the conditions I am sure that elsewhere, had there been one, Cachi would still be in my arms today.
One little girl joined her mother and I asked the clinic to make sure that mother and daughter were incinerated together. And then I took the road home with the nine babies who were starving.
I can’t believe she’s not there, smiling at me and wagging her tail. I smell her, the warm fur anointed with essential oil to keep the mosquitos off. And I’m crying non-stop and hating myself for destroying my miracle child, my born-dead baby who survived her own birth, already an incredible desire to live. Had I not wanted puppies after nearly 2 years without - Cachi would still be here today. How to forgive myself ?
Now I have just one obligation - to care for Cachi’s 9 babies, to be worthy of her as a thank-you for her existance and for her love.
Rest in peace my beautiful Cachi and forgive me if you can.

Skinned Alive of T.W. (Cachmere) - the one born dead who almost died of cold and bled to death. Very, very much alive, warm, clean and active. Now coming up to 5 months' old. Never, ever did a pee in her crate since 8 weeks' old, loves picking up and has a special relationship with humans.
Never tried presenting her before, never put a leash on her, and she just stood there in position for Jez while I took hundreds of photos.
She's Meg's and Never's daughter, so grand-daughter to Carromer's Charlie Chalk and Foulby Still Talking.

She had a lovely time, met a cat and another dog and several humans. Sat on the bench and chewed her lead for an hour, sat on the scales and weighed in at 13 kg spot on, ate a treat or two and was hugged by several people, including the Vet.

Miss "Skinned Alive" now called "Cachmere" in hommage of her very incredible existance, saved between my skin and the cashmere pullover, (and spelled to avoid being "mere cash") loves the little babies coming up to 4 weeks.
It's amazing and/or amusing to see how the O.P.I. and the Poffy babies make Cachmere look HUGE when she's actually TINY !

Life is GOOD (glad I survived !)
"Skinned Alive of T.W." has been renamed (at home) as CACHMERE - for obvious reasons. Calling her "Skinny" just didn't fit.
It took her a while to realise that she was being watched and photographed.

BENCHED ? . . . For those waiting for the iconic "benched photo" : it's just not going to be. I tried, but being alone with no help to play the clown and grab the falling ones as I take the photos . . . . I gave up after a while because I'm in pretty poor shape, and trying to control ten puppies on a bench is just not possible alone today. And for the few days left before they leave - the weather is going to be stormy, wet and cold.
Well done Meggy for a wonderful job.

Might try the puppies on a delicate cycle in the washing machine.
Post scriptum : They enjoyed it. Just not too much spinning as it upsets their knowing where they are, it confuses them.

25 days today and grounded since Sunday. Freedom (almost).
Meg being the good mother she is, goes to eat one of her numerous meals and the puppies leap on her bowl. And Meg retires to watch them eat her food.
Which is pretty strange as it's full of sardines in tomato sauce.

The horrible mess that's the first egg-custard for the Meggies. As usual there's more elsewhere than in their mouths but it can't be easy to find yourself faced with eating instead of sucking for the first time in your tiny life.
In a couple of days they'll have got the hang of it. A bit of a relief for Meg and she enjoys cleaning them up. It's a hard job being entirely responsable for ten babies.

1 week
The Meggies are already one week.
Difficult even with the Punishment Box (which Meggy doesn't like) to get the three smallest to put on enough weight while the biggest put on too much. Disparity in the weight gain. Hopefully better next week.
Tried bottle feeding the two smallest but they weren't having it.
Only two have not doubled their birth-weight this first week : Bordeaux and Fuschia (almost but not quite). Fuschia was the one who almost died at birth and I think I'm going to call her "Skinned Alive of T.W." as she's now alive after an hour and a half stuffed against my skin, a true miracle, but I do love puns and Skinned Alive is just too good to ignore !

It was a long wait, the first night sitting beside Meg . . . . for nothing and dawn broke and everyone was hungry and needed getting out and being poo-picked and settled, with endless running back to check Meg.
Finally at 10.15 p.m. when I was putting the dogs to bed and washing kennels and running back to check Meg - I found one frozen yellow puppy on the tiles, still in it's caul and utterly still. I was horrified and tried to massage and warm her and finally gave up and put her in the scales container for the weight, having cut the cord. Sad. But it's always difficult when you have no help.
An hour later when I was changing Joy's babies I heard a strange noise and realized it came from the table with the scales. That puppy was covered in blood and opening and shutting her mouth. I seized her, totally frozen and tied the cord off to stop the heavy bleeding and shoved her down onto my skin under my pullover, tied a leash between my waist and my bra so that she couldn't fall lower and sat down feeling just horribly guilty and extremely upset. Meg was indifferent.
It took her an hour and a quarter to warm up and start moving and I just kept on talking to her, telling her I loved her and that she'd be alright. Her first brother arrived and it was difficult dealing with him with her still next to my heart on my skin. And when I put him on his mother's teat I removed her with some misgiving and put her beside him. And she just latched on to a teat and started sucking. I could hardly believe it.
The rest of the night was painfully long and the whelping took over 15 hours from start to finish. The last three didn't survive, sadly. One had already been dead a while, weighing only 110 gms. And so we have ten live puppies, 5 blacks and 5 yellows. 7 rather small in weight but all vigourous and Miss Fuschia a true little star.
Meg is my smallest bitch who produces my biggest litters. An amazing girl.

Never mated Meg (Never Give Up). This time under my watchful eye and with my blessing.
With some positive results we may not get 11 again, nor the quantity of blacks . . . but we shall see in February if all goes well.
