16 Months Lovely day today with the visit of Rupert Everett and Pluto (Prince Happy of T.W.) and lunch on the edge of the lake. Cloudy, cooler but no rain and 16 months' old Pluto meeting up again with his mother Meg and with me (whom he obviously recognized as he started to play the fool, . . . just a little showing off !) Normal adolescent. |

PUFFIN ON ICE OF T.W.-BLACK- (Puffin) Has just left for the long road to Bordeaux. My wedding present to my Dog-daughter (aka God-daughter) LAURE and her husband Jérôme who came to pick her up. They arrived back from Iceland yesterday evening and Jérôme left immediately by car to cross France to pick up the baby. Laure who is expecting her human baby in early September joined us on Skype. At least now she has a daughter. Girls are very rare in the family. Loads of love go with this baby ❤️💋❤️💋❤️ |

PLEASED TO BE OF T.W. - FUSCHIA- (Liz)
Not easy to choose a puppy when you want a working dog and a show dog, or at least a dog that works extremely well in Field Trials and looks like a proper Labrador. "It's just ONE breed type" ! (Go on, let's shout this again !) I'm honoured that Anastasia came all the way from Sardinia to choose her puppy. And here's hoping that Meg's baby, whose mother carried her around in her mouth until she got too big, will prove that a dual purpose Labrador still exists. Somewhere way up among the stars, grandfather Dual Ch. Carromer's Charlie Chalk and grandmother Have One On Me of T.W. will be watching over this girl. |

An exhausting but satisfactory day.
The Vet arived at mid-day to microchip, evaluate and vaccinate the ten babies. they made life very hard for her trying to check their hearts with the wriggling around on the table and the noise of the others in the nursery. Finally it turned out to be easier to go outside with the puppy in her arms. They all passed their examination with flying colours (and most of her equipment flying onto the floor) and are now vaccinated and identified. I don't need to worry about missing collars any more.
For the first time all ten were together and after a short nap in a massive heap they had a good run-around in the jungle winding up O.P.I. (in season) and Poffy before coming in for a late lunch.
Tomorrow two are departing and one will be chosen for a friday departure. More leaving on friday, satuday and sunday.

So the Meg babies are seven weeks old tonight.
Slightly smaller weight gain that earlier but this is normal for babies who had a wonderful full-cream-milk mother and were weaned definitely last thursday. They almost never finish a bowl of food.
Prince Happy (Pluto) is a little photographic star, loves all kinds of attention and is my shadow. The girls have not yet got names, pedigree names or pet names. They are still Fuschia, Green and Black till next week

My pregnant Dogdaughter and her husband arrived pretty early on saturday and were both an incredible help between Jérôme mowing the grass, shifting the 2 whelping boxes out of the nursery and carrying bags of dog-food in, and Laure helping with the babies and trying to choose her little girl while we took some silly photos . . .

30 years is a long, long time and the first photo is of Erwin Knight, "Moïse", born in 1989. . . . and seven generations on, from mother to daughter is the one and only black boy in Meg's litter, 2019. Now 3 weeks old and still without an official name for now. Unofficially he's "Brillo"
I'm thinking that "Prince Happy of T.W." might be appropriate for the pedigree.
A very happy visit today.

Meg's joyful little band is now 3 weeks old tonight and they have had their first egg-custard, are up on their feet playing and one is truly amazed, every time, by the change between 14 and 21 days.
At 14 days they are just sucking, eyes barely opening, no inter-reaction with eachother or with humans, just "pee/poo/suck/sleep/pee/poo/suck/sleep . . . lost in their whelp-world.
Now at 21 days they are DOGS, small, albeit, but wagging, licking, playing, running around, trying to climb out of the whelping box, loving a cuddle, protesting about being weighed, eagerly slurping their first food. WOW !

WOW - just WOW and big admiration for Meg's devotion and the quality of her milk.
17 days separate the new-borns on the blue Vet-bed from the same puppies today on the red one.
How I love the different expressions on Meg's little face - day one she was wondering what on earth was happening, where did these things come from ?, why were they sucking her ? Today she's the queen, calm, in total control of the situation, relaxed, happy . . . and her face and body language show it !
This is how MONSTERS are made 🤣

Here are Meg's 4 babies on tuesday at spot on two weeks.
Two weeks old now and their eyes opening. They didn't much like the bright sun outside for the first time.
Today the rails are beng removed and nails cut - all 90 of them !
And yes she has FOUR babies but you can count FIVE in the whelping box. She has adopted little RED collar from Lollypop's litter for the past week and it's paying off.

Sweet Meg, always in the whelping box, a really devoted mother, and foster -mother to Lollypop's little Red Collar (which she removed and ate - the collar, not the baby !) Red is on the far right.

Meg's babies are thriving. As one can see from the weight chart - they are largely over doubling their birth-weight.
Thank goodness Meg has stopped carrying them around. They didn't enjoy it and I didn't enjoy it either. Heart attack each time.

The 4 Meg babies are quiet and busy. Meg has to be dragged out to eat or drink. She picks them up and moves them round to suit her idea of a suitable set-up,
but I nearly have a heart attack each time I see her standing or sitting with a baby hanging out of her mouth. Happily she has a "soft mouth".

All is calm and all is quiet. But lively too!
The 4 babies are suckling well, Meg is proving to be as devoted a mother as was her mother, Bubbles. She would also appear to have loads of milk which for the first day of her first litter is fairly inhabituel.
She wasn't too keen to leave them but the whelping box needed a thorough clean and the fixing of the pig-rails. Meg also needed a thorough clean.
N° 4 has a lovely pair of Bolo pads, I remember Mary Roslyn-Williams telling me in 1979 how they always went with the very best typical Labrador double coats.

What definitely was NOT planned is happening . . . but I am fascinated all the same !
Three yellow bitches - who would believe it, I who have had three times as many males as bitches for the last 3 years. And yellow too!
And 1 black boy.
