SHAKESPEARE Of T.W.() Tragically I forgot to put the card back into the camera for N°4, who is Shakespeare, and this Canon camera does not give you a chance to recuperate as did my old Fuji.. Dreadful discovery. It's not an excuse but it was an incredibly complicated, long and tiring week-end and I was almost bound to forget something. I did. |

I nearly had a heart attack. Yesterday having locked up the Poffies in the Tobacco 2, and the O.P.I.'s in the Tobacco 1, I went upstairs to have some lunch as it was nearly 4 o'clock. Incredible mini-barking from the babies and after a moment I checked through the window to see a yellow baby galloping around, free as air and winding up the other eleven. I rushed downstairs and put him back with the siblings, pretty much aware that he "fell out through the bars" by accident. Went back upstairs. More noise. ALL SEVEN were running amok outside the locked courtyard.
It didn't take them two minutes to realise that by tipping the drinking pail attached to the bars, they got leverage onto the wall, from where they squeezed through the bars, fell into the flower container and having broken all the flowers, they climbed out into freedom. It just took the first one to show the others how to do it.
Not always easy to be one step ahead of a band of quick-witted, enterprising, sportive puppies aged 53 days. Particularly sad when you realise I was on my 28,191st day . . . . and they won ! (sigh)

A million thanks to Erika for her devoting Saturday afternoon to helping me TRY to bench-photo the Poffy's.
These yellow brats are the puppies who have Multi-Dual Champion Carromer's Charlie Chalk as their grandfather and Never Give Up Of Tintagel Winds (Never) as their father.

Six weeks old ! That special date when they must weigh ten times their birth-weight.
They do. And there's just a 18 grms difference between the Poffy average and the O.P.I. average.

Today is the "Fête des voisins" at T.W.L. (the neighbours' get-together).
It almost killed me carrying 12 puppies, one by one, up the stairs to put them in the little sunny kennel all together. But seeing their joyful pleasure greeting eachother made feeling dead worthwhile. At 5 weeks they definitely need more than just the pens in the nursery.
This afternoon they are going on an exploration outing.

When the two Mummies were added to the group after a hectic foray into the uncut grass with me wildly counting from one to twelve incessantly . . . they were delighted to discover that the selection of the milk supply was "as you like", so we got the Yellows trying O.P.I. and the Blacks trying Poffy and both big girls being generous and loving whomsoever was attached to them, their own or some they'd never ever seen before.
Now it's time to get them back into the nursery and prepare their supper.

Happy THREE weeks to all the babies.
Everyone is doing well. Average weight : 2,113 kg. You can't get closer than that !
Now eating Egg custard with Puppy meal & milk + MUMMIES ! And their table manners are seriously improving too.

Having been invited to eat out yesterday evening, the Poffies decided that it was time, this morning, to show that they can also drink standing at the bar . . . .
Soon it will be time to leave the whelping boxes for wider horizons. They grow and they adapt and they learn incredibly fast when you think that this time three weeks ago they were just preparing to step out in single file and discover the world (with the exception of O.P.I.'s Pale Blue who had taken the decision to stay with Mummy and obliged his mother to undergo a C-section. Tiresome brat).
Now they run, they jump, they play, they wag when you hug them.

Egg-custard day 1 ! Variable enthusiasm for it's hard at just 18 days of snuggling up to Mummy and lying in beatitude up against her warm teats to . . . eating in a bowl some unknown yellow stuff when all you've ever done is suck. This radical change . . . sucks !

The Yellows are squatting the Blacks (of O.P.I.) in rotation. Thank Dog that Labradors aren't a breed where mothers eat other bitches' puppies. You can switch whelping boxes, switch mothers, switch puppies and everyone is happy to adapt. O.P.I. has more milk than Poffy and fewer babies.
Now 11 days' old - egg custard coming up in another week, which will take the pressure off everyone, including me !

A difficult night with absolutely no rest. Poffy's first puppy arrived at 8 p.m. and the first five arrived in good order. Just Red collar was losing lots of blood and I realised how quickly I am losing my eyesight between the Cataract and the Glaucoma when I can't even see to tie up the cord. Afterwards I had to take extreme care that Poffy didn't lick and lick till she swallowed the intestines of the puppy. It happend to me some years ago. Horrifying.
So I gave her to O.P.I. as a foster mother and then added two more.
Despite three shots of Ocytocine (the first two produced puppies N°6 and N°7) - the final shot did not produce N°8 and I sat there from 3.30 a.m. until I had to start to care for all the other dogs. The tragedy when you have no help is that you lose a puppy so easily when you're getting the big dogs out and fed. Somewhere between 9.30 and 10 o'clock despite going back and forth to check - Poffy let N°8 slip out and ignored his existance. I found him at 10 o'clock but it was too late to save him.
A breeder's life is hard and sometimes bitter with guilt for what you didn't do. Peppered with tragedies and disappointments along with the titles and the podiums which are all that other people only see.
So Poffy has 7 babies shared with O.P.I for lack of milk. There are 4 dogs and 3 bitches.
