A million thanks to Erika for her devoting Saturday afternoon to helping me TRY to bench-photo the O.P.I's.
These black brats are the puppies who have Multi-Dual Champion Carromer's Charlie Chalk as their grandfather and Foulby Still Talking as their father. A super combination of genetic values. There's a bitch staying with me, but I still have no idea which one - they leapt off the bench before I could decide.
What an illusion to imagine I was going to get the puppies lined up sitting quietly on the bench. . . . .no comment !
In fact the last photo posted here represents the bench most of the afternoon with the black brats leaping off the minute they were carefully placed. Not the least bit interested by the noises we made which destroyed our voices ! Total human exhaustion.

Six weeks old ! That special date when they must weigh ten times their birth-weight.
They do. And there's just a 18 grms difference between the Poffy average and the O.P.I. average.
Good little puppies ! Good devoted mothers Good 24 hour non-stop breeder !

Today is the "Fête des voisins" at T.W.L. (the neighbours' get-together).
It almost killed me carrying 12 puppies, one by one, up the stairs to put them in the little sunny kennel all together. But seeing their joyful pleasure greeting eachother made feeling dead worthwhile. At 5 weeks they definitely need more than just the pens in the nursery.
This afternoon they are going on an exploration outing.

When the two Mummies were added to the group after a hectic foray into the uncut grass with me wildly counting from one to twelve incessantly . . . they were delighted to discover that the selection of the milk supply was "as you like", so we got the Yellows trying O.P.I. and the Blacks trying Poffy and both big girls being generous and loving whomsoever was attached to them, their own or some they'd never ever seen before.
Now it's time to get them back into the nursery and prepare their supper.

Happy THREE weeks to all the babies.
Everyone is doing well. Average weight : 2,134 kg. You can't get closer than that !
Now eating Egg custard with Puppy meal & milk + MUMMIES ! And their table manners are seriously improving too.

Egg-custard day 1 ! Variable enthusiasm for it's hard at just 19 days of snuggling up to Mummy and lying in beatitude up against her warm teats to . . . eating in a bowl some unknown yellow stuff when all you've ever done is suck. This radical change . . . sucks !

The Yellows (of Poffy) are squatting the Blacks in rotation. Thank Dog that Labradors aren't a breed where mothers eat other bitches' puppies. You can switch whelping boxes, switch mothers, switch puppies and everyone is happy to adapt. O.P.I. has more milk than Poffy and fewer babies.
Now 13 and 11 days' old - egg custard coming up in another week, which will take the pressure off everyone, including me !

O.P.I.'s were one week yesterday and have remarkably recovered from the fall-out from their mother being very unwell for four days just after her C-section to get N°6 out alive (having lost N°1).
Four of the five puppies (see the blue marker on the weight chart) lost some weight but they are all thriving now.

How silly can you get when you are only five in a big whelping box
and manage to block oneanother under the rail in one corner . . . sometimes you have to chop the head off one to extricate the others (naaa, I'm kidding □□)

Contractions at 5h10 but, of course, Murphy's Law (again), the first very large, very dead puppy dragged out from a yelping O.P.I. at (dead on) 7 a.m. (upset but still punning). A poor boy I wept over. Then in the next 90 minutes the three much smaller bitches in an almost drowned state. Then nothing. Ocytocine + calcium + walking O.P.I. but . . . no more contractions. I called the Vet and went for an echograph. One puppy. Heart beating. More Ocytocine and at 3 p.m. if no result - back to Vet for a C-section.
Back at 3 p.m. and one and a half hours sitting waiting and fuming while they sold specific dog food and other non-urgent things while 4 babies at home had no mother and one baby in utero had no air. Then another echograph to be sure the one lagging behind still had a heart (he did) and I left O.P.I and went home to do all that needed doing. At 6.30 p.m. I rushed back before the curfew to collect O.P.I. and her little boy and reunited them all with relief.
So there are five, two boys and three girls. O.P.I. has milk, a little down in quantity because of the operation, and is learning how to get in and out of the whelping box without walking all over her kids.

The start - Le début
Alain arrived from Paris, complete with microscope and all that was needed to inseminate O.P.I. in utero. She was inseminated twice, at 4 p.m. and again at 8.30 p.m. with the valiant Chatterbox, nearly 12 years old and still capable of producing excellent mobile sperm.
