Left this morning for Lausanne in Switzerland for his new life and new family. How not to be happy when he's going to have so much love and so much fun. This is what makes breeding heart-warming.
Long and happy life, little boy
(Masks were removed just for the photos to the great relief of the baby who loves licking noses !)

Remedy for Blues of T.W.

REMEDY oh Remedy, you have gone, and left a hole in my heart. You were my little prince.
Letting you go is giving you a new life with a ten-year old Charlie grandson and a new "owner" whom I've known for many, many years. (22 years when he took Plotting Treason in 1999, Charlie's son) But you're leaving me feeling bereft.
You eat well, you drink well and you love life.
Picture
Remedy "at home" and he ate every bit of his supper. Love seeing how he's already settled in. Incredible to measure his perseverance and courage, his "will to live" over the past 11 weeks.□

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY to REMEDY FOR BLUES - same problem as StarTrek . . . . and look at him today. My greatest pleasure and greatest satisfaction this year is that seven weeks of intubing has saved two beautiful and loving dogs. Two specialist Vets said they couldn't understand why I'd not euthanized them at birth because it was far too much work and effort to save them. Maybe if they looked at these photos they would understand better . . . when a puppy wants desperately to live, I want desperately to help him.

Leaps and bounds - now drinking well but with a reflux through the left nostril, always the worst side. But he's coping well. He's also ready to set the washing machine going when asked. What a clever, useful little boy.
9 weeks today, and 7,130 Kg, which translates into 15,7 lbs. Not bad when one measures the difficult road he's taken from birth.
Picture
A MIRACLE HAS JUST HAPPENED TONIGHT ! □□ For the very first time (9 weeks tomorrow) REMEDY has lapped milk in a bowl. To be strictly honest there was just half an inch but he lapped it all up.

Seven weeks and so pleased with them all and a special pleasure in Remedy"s development. Still intubed 3 times a day but eating well and gaining well and such a lovely little fellow.
First he says "good morning" to his cousins, with a take five paw up. Then he goes to wish a good day to Chatterbox - a very different, respectful attitude from that which he has when winding up the siblings from outside their/his pen.
Finally he asks me what he can do to help - tear up newspaper to make the shredded ones ? He's good at that. His favourite job.
Change the plug for the vacuum cleaner and bring back to the nursery from the office the long green electric cord ? Huh . . . . no, really NOT a good idea Remedy, best way to electrocute yourself. You are definitely electric and perfectly cute but put together my seven weeks of intubing would be entirely wasted !

5 minutes with no rain and a dismal forecast for this next week made me think it might be worth preBenching the Jewels this morning in case there should be nothing more possible before they leave. Dissipated and not interested in my plethora of hysterical noises, nor the whistles and clickers, nor the dummies. I gave up after half an hour.

Looks as though I'm going to have a problem finding a Vet prepared to and capable of analysing Remedy's problem. With a solution. When I explained in detail the situation, I was surprised to get the answer that they had no history of dealing with this as in their experience the puppy is just euthanized at birth. Oh ! Not this one. That made me shiver.

My little treasure - not the best picture but he detests being weighed, probably as I do it every time I feed him both before and after - so 10 to 12 times a day. I'd hate that too !

Remedy yesterday with his siblings. He may be tiny but he's full of life and it's the first time I realised that at less than four weeks old a puppy can recognise his name and come running to greet you. Of course normally, at this age, they don't have names.

Intubing Remedy at 2 a.m. and I couldn't resist taking these pictures of Jewel snuggling her babies, and the one on the look-out post - or did she decide that sleeping on her mother's back was more comfortable than the Vet-bed ? Or maybe she just believes she's an opossum ?
Their last day in the whelping box for the crawling about on Mummy's back could lead to a nasty fall. They've been looking for a means of escaping for the last few days. So be it !

Egg custard - shows you when the mother's milk is much more satisfying and in extraordinary quantity, none of Remedy's siblings is particularly interested for now.
However, Remedy, unable to suck/drink from his mother's teats, disliking, even abhorring the gastric tube, is learning to lap the egg custard. Maybe, maybe, he can be saved.
Feeling happy with these photos.

REMEDY FOR BLUES - aka Royal Blue - 16 days today. He's progressing slowly (Joy's babies at 5 days weigh quite a bit more than he does)
He hates the tube feeding but without it, he wouldn't still be here.
Note that the towel in which he is wrapped has naturally formed a heart just above his head in the first photo . . . it's a sign !

Jewel's are 15 days.
A very, very difficult week. REMEDY FOR BLUES needs constant intubing as he cannot suck. But he's doing well, though he hates the tube, and it will be interesting - and vital - to see him with the egg custard coming up soon. Let's hope he can lap ! He may be small but is up on four feet and very active.

Royal Blue is still with us, for now. But he refuses any form of artificial puppy milk, syringes or bottles. So I have to hold him on the teat and remove the others to the Punishment Box.

8 days old today.
Sadly Royal Blue is seriously lagging behind his siblings. I can't see or feel a cleft palate but he has trouble sucking and refuses the bottle. I take a syringe and give him drop by drop into his mouth but it's fastidious work for poor results. He is lively but . . .
This kind of situation is the heart-break for a breeder, watching a puppy fighting for life, sometimes losing it, and having to move forward with tears in your eyes. Sometimes you win (as with Isa) and sometimes you don't. Only time will tell.

The start - Le début

I was delighted to envisage an all-black litter judging by the phenominal number of people waiting for, above all, BLACK bitches. This morning after a careful analysis of the situation (temperature down to 36,9°, tearing up her whelping box papers) I decided to have C-section to avoid losing half the puppies at 3 a.m. with no Vet available.
It was a shock, a totally unexpected shock, to find myself receiving into my hands six puppies in five minutes to help them breathe, cut their cords and clear their lungs. Yes six. As the (almost) unreadable X-ray on Friday had scheduled. But, But, BUT . . . .SIX YELLOW PUPPIES !
The mystery is unfathomable as to whether this crafty Never, who's done it before, mated her surreptitiously BEFORE I removed her or whether it was after she returned. Never Give Up, the aptly named, is the master of invisible and undetected matings. So there are going to be a heap of disappointed people and one or two full of excitement and pleasure to get what they preferred. Four boys, Two girls.

Here's what Jewel went through to get six live babies.
Picture
We've arrived at the clinic - equipped as usual to take care of each puppy as it arrives (C-section always a horrible rush with 10 seconds between each whelp !)
